Who we are
Glasgow Community Concert Band (or GCCB as we like to go by) is a fun, friendly, and enthusiastic group of people who enjoy playing music together, as well as socialise and support local events.
The original band was formed in 1988, and although it has been through a number of changes over the years, we still have a few members from the early days but many newer members too .
What is a concert band?
It's a bit like an orchestra without a string section. Generally comprised of woodwind, brass and percussion players (as well as a string bass), but certain pieces of concert band music may feature additional instruments such as a piano or harp.
Whilst we are a traditional concert band in name and in some of the music we play, we are far from stuck in the past.
Our Committee is comprised of members and always open to feedback and trying new things. Our Musical Director reguarly offers opportunities to anyone who would like to perform a solo piece, or even have a go at conducting.
In our band is also no hierarchy within instrument sections. Solos are shared out, we have no named principal players, and there are no extra credits for playing multiple instruments, although it can come in handy on occasion!
Why are we a "community" band?
Our band has members of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, and there is no audition process to join (however beginner players may some of the music a little more challenging).
Having the word "community" in our name serves us in two ways. We are a registered charity and in keeping with our charitable objects our band endeavours to reflect a community focused spirit and inclusivity.
Historically we have supported local charities such as SAMH, Refuweegee and Beatson, but more recently we hosted a joint concert with East Glasgow Music School, did some Christmas music busking at Silverburn, and even ventured overseas to support Bute Community Band in their recent concerts.
But the word "community" also speaks to the sense of community within the band. From regular organised social events such as quiz nights and panto outings, to finding gig buddies, ad hoc games nights and jigsaw meet ups, there is always the opportunity just around the corner to get to know someone new in the band a bit better, or just hang out with your band besties.

The bad news is that we currently have a waiting list for most sections so whilst we would love to welcome more people to the band, at the moment it is not always possible. We would be particularly excited to hear from any bassoonists!
